The Just Transition Alliance (JTA) is an Environmental Justice 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in San Diego, CA that works to address environmental and economic issues at local, state, national, and international levels. Together with front-line communities and workers living on the fence-line of polluting industries, the JTA works to create healthier communities and workplaces. JTA is seeking a self-motivated and committed Program Assistant to join our team. The Program Assistant will play a key administrative support role, supporting our programs and providing general administrative support. Strong candidates will demonstrate exceptional time-management and enjoy working within a small, team that is mission- and results-driven and community oriented.


Position Overview

The Program Assistant works closely with the Executive Director to carry out the organization’s workplan, the organization’s campaigns, and other special projects. As the Program Assistant you will provide administrative and logistical support and be responsible for tracking and follow-through for organizational efforts, responsibilities, and deadlines.

As the lead organization for a national-based markets campaign that advocates for healthier consumer products at national discount retailer chains, the JTA is looking for a dynamic team member who will make sure the organization stays on track and organized. As the Program Assistant you will work hand-in-hand with the Executive Director and the other campaign leadership to carry out the workplan of the campaign.

This is a full-time, San Diego based or remote position. Regular hours are Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, occasional evening and weekend hours as required. Must have the ability to travel significantly for in-person meetings, conferences, and other events nationally (as much as 2-3 trips per month).

The Program Assistant Reports to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to provide communications, coordination, and logistics management to the organization, the organization’s campaigns and other projects.
  • Complete a broad variety of administrative support tasks including:
    • email management (sorting, flagging, prioritizing);
    • scheduling and organizing calls and meetings;
    • notetaking and tracking follow-through;
    • composing and preparing correspondence that is sometimes sensitive and confidential;
    • assist in collecting, filing, and centralizing documents and materials;
    • maintain the organizations workplan and calendar;
    • and organizing logistics for meetings and travel.
  • Provide support to JTA’s work leading the Campaign for Healthier Solutions (CHS).
  • Maintain the organization’s website and its presence on social media accounts.
  • Assist with other tasks as needed.

Qualifications

  • Deep commitment to the organization’s mission and values on and around Environmental Justice, social change, and related matters.
  • Personal, professional or academic knowledge and/or experience with Environmental Justice, grassroots work, or related activism.
  • Ability to travel significantly for in-person meetings, conferences, and other events (as much as 2-3 trips per month during normal times).
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in collaboration and with a virtual team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to handle and prioritize conflicting needs and follow through on projects to successful completion, often with deadline pressures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Mac OS, and various social media platforms.
  • Bilingual skills in English & Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent education and/or work experience preferred.

Location

Remote from anywhere in the United States. San Diego, CA area preferred.

Salary

This is a full-time, hourly position starting at $18-$20 an hour, and provides paid vacation and sick leave.
